How does it work?

1. Select a category or theme to browse and filter the available designs.
2. Change your cake shape if needed
3. If you don't have a photo, select "I don't have a photo" to see designs that you can personalise with a message
4. Select the design you want to use.  This opens the design tool
   • Upload a photo (if you're using one) and resize it as needed to fit the frame
   • Add a message and resize it, change the font, colour and outline so it stands out against your design
   • Save your design
5. Once saved, you can re-edit your design and change the frame.  
6. To complete your order, select the size and Add to your cart.

• The toppers are pre-cut so all your have to do is put it on your cake.  Perhaps finish it off with some sprinkles, smarties, or a bit of extra piping!

• You can add your cake topper to most types of cake finishes - fondant, buttercream or fresh cream.   For fresh cream we recommend putting the topper on at the last minute (don't put your topper in the fridge or it will melt!)

Some Frequently Asked Questions

What is a printed/photo cake topper?

A printed cake topper is an image printed on a sheet of edible paper with edible inks, used to decorate a cake or cupcakes.  At Big Day Cakes, we manufacture our own edible inks and print on sugar paper/icing paper.  The topper is cut to the required size once it has been printed.

Can I put a picture on a cake?

Absolutely!  Our cake toppers are printed on edible sugar (icing) paper with edible ink.  We'll cut it to the size you need.

What kind of icing can I put a cake topper onto?  Can I use an edible print on whipped cream?

The sugar (icing) paper that we print on can be used on all types of cake toppers, however it works best with dry toppings such as fondant, buttercream or royal icing.  You can use fresh cream, however the sugar paper will dissolve over time so pop it on just before serving.  It shouldn't be stored in the fridge.

The sugar paper is white and slightly translucent.  It works best with light coloured cake toppings.

How do you stick edible images on to cakes or cupcakes?

• Make sure your hands are dry and try to avoid touching the picture.
• For buttercream toppings, just place the cake or cupcake topper on the buttercream and gently press down.  
• For fondant icing and royal icing, brush a small amount of water on the top of the cake.  Place the topper on and gently press down.
• The sugar paper is quite flexible.  If you remove the topper from the bag and leave to dry out overnight, the sugar paper will harden and can be used to stand up in buttercream on a cupcake for instance.

What sizes and shapes of edible toppers are available?

We have a wide variety of shapes and sizes available.  We advise leaving about 1/2 to 1 inch around the edge of the topper, so they are suitable for cakes 1+inches larger than the topper size, e.g. a 7" topper will work well on an 8" or 9" cake.

• Round and square toppers come in 5", 6" and 7". 
• Cupcake toppers are available in 4cm and 5cm diameter.
• Rectangular toppers are available in 3 sizes
  • 13 x 19cm / 5 x 7.5 in
  • 15 x 22cm / 6 x 8.75 in
  • 18 x 26cm / 7 x 10.25 in

How long do photo/printed cake toppers last? How long can edible pictures sit on a cake?

Our cake toppers are printed on sugar paper and have a shelf life of 12 months.  However, the quality of the print may deteriorate over time.  We recommend using the cake topper within 2 months of receipt.  It should be stored in a cool dry place, out of direct sunlight.

• On fondant or royal icing, the cake topper will be fine on a cake for a couple of days.  
• If the cake topping is buttercream, we would recommend no more than 24 hours
• For fresh cream, put the topper on just before serving (the moisture in the cream will start to dissolve the sugar paper)

Prices start from £7.50/€8.60 up to £8.50/€9.80, depending on the size.

What are the ingredients in an edible cake topper?

Sugar, glucose syrup, non-hydrogenated palm oil, invert sugar syrup, added water, acacia gum, glycerine, mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids, xanthan gum, water, mono-propylene glycol, colours (E102, E122, E133), potassium sorbate, citric acid, tri-sodium citrate.
